The Breitling Bentley collaboration started in 2002 when the watch brand designed the dashboard clock for Bentley’s Continental GT. This led to the release of a special-edition Bentley Le Mans watch commemorating Bentley’s 2003 Le Mans victory, and later to the Breitling for Bentley collection, blending Breitling’s high-precision watchmaking with Bentley’s high performance and mechanics.
The Breitling Bentley GMTA47362 is a love child of that relationship, and we are honored to welcome it to our Lower Gwynedd showroom. Priced at $4,995, it meets the hype and then some. We experienced its machine-like functionality firsthand, with an overload of positive feedback.
Breitling Bentley Chronograph Review
This watch is big and bold, yet highly sophisticated. Here’s what we noticed based on our first-hand experience.
Appearance
At 49 mm, this is a hunk of a watch. Its thickness is substantial and especially prominent thanks to the tall case flanks. The polished stainless steel gives it a bright, reflective quality, creating an undeniably dominating presence on the wrist.
The diamond-patterned bezel deliberately mimics the look of the grilles and controls of the Bentley dashboard. As one of the watch’s most distinctive features, it provides a sporty, automotive aesthetic.
With three subdials and a GMT 24-hour scale, this watch has a lot going on, but let’s focus on the underlying design elements first. The dial is an unapologetic glossy black with broad, polished hour and minute hands with lume, helping them stand out against the dark background. The applied markers, recessed subdials, and inner rotating ring create a multi-layered look that adds depth.
The Fit
This watch is for people who find larger sports watches too small. It will dominate a smaller wrist, although it could serve as a statement showpiece in those applications. In any event, it will start to overhang or completely overhang any wrist size under 7 inches.
The lugs curve down to hug the wrist and anchor the head, preventing it from flopping around. And you can keep it more stable by adjusting the band to a snug but not overly tight fit. But there’s no denying that this watch is a massive hunk of steel.
The Strap
The vulcanized rubber strap plays a massive role in how the watch fits. It transforms it from a giant brick of jewelry to something you can actually manage. While supple, it’s more durable than soft silicon and provides a ‘toolish’ look. It gives the watch a sporty appearance, distinguishing it from a luxury timepiece.
The molded center insert extends from the band to lock the case in place, then flows seamlessly into the broader rubber band. It is integrated into the watch to create a continuous line, providing an engineered aesthetic, while highlighting the watch’s bold appearance.
The final piece of the puzzle is the deployment clasp, which features a spring-loaded push piece for quick-adjust functionality. It offers up to 10mm of tool-free adjustment, meaning it can accommodate swelling on hot days and other factors that impact wrist size.
Caseback and Movement
Turning the watch over, we find a solid stainless-steel screw-down caseback that’s highly polished, carrying the overall aesthetic. It also reinforces the watch’s robustness, setting it apart from dressy showpieces.
The movement is Breitling Caliber 47B, an automatic chronograph with GMT functionality. COSC-certified, it has been independently tested to chronometer accuracy standards. The 42–46-hour power reserve further establishes its reliability.
Functionality
The watch has a ton going on, including its GMT hand, with a red hour tip, that makes one complete rotation per day. It can serve as a regular second-hand or an AM/PM indicator.
Printed around the dial is a 24-hour track in contrasting white-on-black for optimal legibility. You can read the local time using the main hour and minute hands, while the GMT hand reads your home or second time zones.
Around that is a ring of city names, each corresponding to a major time zone. Rotate the bezel and align your reference city with the current GMT indication to read the time in multiple cities at once.
Then there’s the three subdials at 3,6, and 9 o’clock. One subdial runs seconds while the other two are chronograph counters serving as 30-minute and 12-hour totalizers.
