A Collector’s Take: A. Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone 136.029 White Gold
November 26, 2025When the A Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone was first released in 1994, it marked the start of a contemporary watch line for the luxury watch company. Refreshed for the 2024 model year, the watch brought back many of its signature looks and updated functionality. Its elegant yet sporty appearance makes it a versatile choice.
Precision Watches is honored to add the new Lange 1 to our collection. Here’s what we noticed when we got a chance to have a closer look at this stunning timepiece.
A Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone 136.029 White Gold Review
At first impression, this German luxury watch has it all. It’s weighty yet elegant, sporty yet luxurious. Stand-out features include its asymmetrical dial, ease of legibility across two time zones, and impeccable aesthetics.
Let’s dive in deeper and learn why else we fell in love with this watch.
Sublime Aesthetics
To sum up aesthetics in a phrase- this watch is simply remarkable. The offset main dial, which keeps time for the primary time zone, counterbalances the subdial, which tracks for alternate time zones, providing a vintage, unconventional appearance. The large panorama date window, smooth-polished case, and wielded lugs are signature brand features that enhance the design.
Although the case is black, it is made of sterling silver and galvanized to produce a black finish. All dial furnishings are made of white gold, which pops nicely against the black background for optimal legibility. Additionally, the material will not tarnish or fade over time.
The Fit
The Lange 1 pays homage to its original case size, so it is rather big. It features a 41.9 mm white gold case, 11.5mm thick, measuring 50mm from lug to lug.
Passing it around the showroom, we found that it is best suited for wrists 16 cm or larger. On smaller wrists, it begins to encroach outward, resulting in a bulky fit.
Despite its large size, it balances nicely, so it feels substantial without being overly weighty or top-heavy. Additionally, the domed bezel means it slips under a dress shirt without disruption.
The Bracelet
The bracelet is a beautiful alligator leather with a semi-gloss finish and stuffing for volume. The inside is a smooth calfskin.
Rather than a conventional buckle, it features a folding clasp that’s easy to operate and less likely to pinch. It is made of 18k white gold alloy throughout, eliminating the need for rhodium plating.
Caseback and Movement
Turning the watch over, you see the same fine attention to detail integrated. The transparent design allows you to view features like floral patterns on the scroll, a mix of blue-fired and black-polished screws, and rubies set into gold chaton cups. Each caseback is customized, so no two are exactly alike.
The German silver alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc is very rust-resistant. It is accompanied by a L1411.1 movement, a 72-hour power reserve, and a 3Hz frequency, with 30 meters of water resistance.
Functionality
We would be remiss not to mention the watch’s clever functionality, specifically in the subdial. A small arrow on the subdial points to the city for which it is set. Turn the dial, and it automatically updates to the new destination.
The arrow also features a red indicator that shows whether the city is subject to time zone changes. The blue in the center differentiates between morning and night.
About A. Lange & Sohne
To know a watch is to understand its history, and A. Lange & Sohne’s has a fascinating backstory, which the Lange 1 is very much a part of.
The company was founded in 1873 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange. Although it didn’t achieve the mainstream visibility of some Swiss watchmakers, it found its niche with limited production and boutique marketing.
In the mid-1940s, the company was set to pass to Ferdinand’s grandson, Walter Lange, but, as with many businesses, World War II disrupted operations. Specifically, its main production building was bombed on the last night of the war in 1945, forcing the family to seek out a new start.
Fast forward to 1989, Germany celebrates the fall of the Berlin Wall, and Walter immediately works to relaunch his business. It was up and running in 1990, and the first release, the Lange 1, marked its contemporary era.
Various designs would follow, including the latest A Lange & Sohne Lange 1 Time Zone.
