Catch the Moon with the New Omega Speedmaster Moonphase

It is not every day that we see a watch as lovely as the 2018 Omega Speedmaster Moonphase 304.93.44.52.03.002, AKA the Blue Side of the Moon. The watch’s hefty size, aventurine glass dial, and luxury aesthetics stand out. As part of the Moonphase collection, it accurately tracks the 29.5-day lunar cycle, requiring adjustment only once every ten years.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase- Let’s Talk Specs

First, let’s get specific.

One of the first things you’ll notice about the watch is its bold, hefty case. It has a 44.25 mm case diameter and 17.1 mm thickness, making it a substantial choice. However, its 21mm expanse between lugs means it sits nicely on the average man’s wrist (16 cm circumference or broader).

The dial is blue aventurine glass, with sparkling inclusions that give it a shimmering appearance reminiscent of the solar system. The starlit face and moon phase complication further enhances the appeal. Its gold, loomed indices and red-tipped date hand enhance its sophisticated appearance.

The blue ceramic case and bezel ring are scratch-resistant and lightweight. It also features a scratch-resistant blue sapphire crystal.

The strap adds to the luxurious aesthetic. It’s high-grade alligator leather tapers from larger to smaller scales. The gusset prevents gouging and ensures the watch’s longevity while the fold-over strap supports stability.

A transparent case back allows you to view the watch’s inner workings, including its skeletonized bridge. Other specs to consider include the self-winding movement, up to 50 meters of water resistance, 9904 calibre movement, and 60-hour power reserve.

About Moonphase Watches

The Omega-lunar link is based on a long relationship between the watch company and space exploration. Although the line was first released in 1957, the space legacy began in 1965 when NASA qualified it for its piloted missions due to its ability to withstand rigorous testing that would destroy most watches. Since then, it has been worn on all six moon landings, earning it the nickname “Moonwatch.”

In 1985, Omega honored its relationship with NASA, releasing the SpeedyMoon, the first watch to feature a complication showing the moon’s phases. It syncs with the moon’s progression through its 29 ½ day cycle. You can use the center winding component to quick-set the watch through various moon phases and see the changes in the dial.

The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase 304.93.44.52.03.002 is one of Omega’s many Moonphase watches known for their beauty and precision. They may also feature:

  • A Meteorite Dial: Some models, like the Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite, feature a dial made from genuine moon meteorite.
  • Two Counters: Many watches feature a two-counter layout. This watch offers both a minute and hour counter.
  • Material Variety: The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch often features high-end materials like stainless steel, ceramic, platinum, and 18K gold.

X Side of the Moon Omega Watches

The relationship between Omega watches and space exploration deepened with the release of Dark Side of the Moon in 2013, a tribute to the Apollo 8 mission and the astronauts who viewed the moon’s far side. This initial model was crafted from black ceramic, a nod to the moon’s darker regions. The watchmaker incorporated elements like laser-ablated moon surfaces, skeletonized dials, and engravings related to the Apollo 8 mission.

Since then, Omega has released various ‘side of moon’ models, including gray and white. In 2018, they stunned followers with an all-blue ceramic series that perfectly captured the space theme while providing optimal elegance.

METAS Testing

Like many Omega watches, the Omega Moonphase is METAS certified. This means it was tested by the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology, an independent organization that certifies high-precision timepieces. It goes beyond traditional testing to evaluate the entire timepiece, ensuring optimal movement, water resistance, and anti-magnetism.

The certification also means it meets Master Chronometer standards, which is to say, it keeps time with an average 0-5 second deviation per day, even after being exposed to shocks, water, and fields of magnetism. It is exposed to 8 fields of testing before receiving a passing grade.

All Ceramics Composition

We use the word ‘ceramic’ when describing the watch, but let’s take a moment to appreciate that everything on it is blue ceramic. This includes the case, crown, pushers, bezel, dial, the Moonphase disc, and folding clasp. The near and far sides of the moon on the ceramic dial incorporate a LiquidMetal technology, apparent on the tachymeter scale application. The material coats titanium, ensuring strength and flexibility.

The watch’s ceramic composition also means it is lightweight and scratch-resistant. Furthermore, the material supports the watch’s vibrant color, ensuring it looks its best in various lighting environments.

Stunning Yet Uncluttered Dial Details

The Omega Moonphase also stands out for its detailed dial. It features two dials, one showing the chronograph’s hour and minute recorder and the other displaying the date and running seconds.

The date indicator has a red half moon, a color accent that continues to the tip of the chronograph seconds hand, and the engraved Speedmaster logo on the dial. The 18-karat white gold hands contrast with the dial’s deep blue color. The moon phase disc may be its loveliest feature, with two moons, representing the near and far sides, illustrated in liquid metal.

Overall, the dial is detailed without appearing cluttered.
