The New Omega Planet Ocean: An In-Depth Hands-On Review
November 19, 2025The Omega Planet Ocean is an iconic timepiece that sets a precedent for luxury dive watches. Its reliable seals, innovative water resistance, and legible features made it a favorite for professional and recreational divers and the military. Fine lines and an elegant appearance made it optimal for everyday wear.
The watch was first released in 2005, with second- and third-generation models released in 2011 and 2016, respectively. Now, 20 years after the original debuted, Omega premiered a fourth generation, and Precision Watches is lucky enough to have it in stock. We gave it a test drive to share our experience.
Omega Planet Ocean Review
The first thing to know about this watch is that it’s totally new. It’s smaller and slimmer than its predecessors, and key components have been changed. It also comes in three great color variations.
Given its smaller, slimmer design, it fits nicely on the wrist and is less top-heavy than previous models. It can be worn more easily under a suit or with a dress shirt, but it also pairs well with sporty attire. The watch is bulky enough for a thicker wrist but also sits well on smaller frames.
The lack of bulkiness is mainly due to the absence of the helium escape valve. This is perhaps the most controversial update to the new Omega Planet Ocean.
With optimal helium-tightness, the designers determined the new model did not need the valve. As a result, the new watch has fewer penetrations, improving its reliability and producing a cleaner case and more powerful appearance.
The case measures 42mm in diameter, a nod to the first-generation release. Its thickness is 13.79mm, a considerable reduction from the previous 16.1mm. Even though the watch appears angular, its slimmer case makes it fit nicely on the wrist for optimal wearability.
The Case
The case size isn’t the only thing to focus on with the new Planet Ocean. We also need to talk about case construction. The new cases feature stainless steel exteriors with a titanium ring inside.
The titanium ring provides the watch with up to 600 meters of water resistance, eliminating the need for a helium escape valve.
The Bracelet
Although the metal bracelets on the new Planet Ocean have been noticeably refined — now flatter, more angular, and visually aligned with the updated case — the collection also includes fully integrated rubber strap options. Both configurations complement the watch’s sharper profile, but the rubber versions offer an especially grounded feel that reduces any top-heaviness on the wrist.
The bracelet’s patterned exterior design adds interest, while the wave pattern on the inside enhances comfort and grip. It is soft and flexible on the wrist.
A fold-over clasp lets you put on and take off the watch in one swift movement. The vulcanized rubber and materials are UV- and dust-resistant, and chemically resistant, optimized for wear in harsh conditions.

The Dial
While the dial features some changes, most are subtle. All three models feature a matte-black dial with arrow hands and high luminosity. The numerals are squarer and, in our opinion, more streamlined with the new, more powerful appearance.
Caseback and Movement
Flipping the watch over, you find it features a solid caseback made of titanium rather than steel, making it lighter and more corrosion-resistant. It features the Planet Ocean seahorse signature logo, a nod to the watch brand’s vintage roots.
The 8912-caliber movement is not new; we’ve seen it before in the Ultra Deep. It meets Omega’s high standards, featuring a coaxial master chronometer and a 60-hour power reserve. The movement is highly accurate and resistant to shock, magnetic fields, and temperature changes.
Variants
The watch is available in three primary color variants, as follows:
- Orange: Orange is a common color choice in Omega watches, but the orange in the new watches is brighter and bolder. The new model features an orange ceramic bezel, matte orange Arabic numerals against a matte black dial, and a white hybrid ceramic diving scale. My personal favorite features a matching orange rubber strap, which just pops.
- Blue: Features a matte black dial, blue ceramic bezel, matte white numerals, and a white enamel diving scale. This design offers a more subtle overall aesthetic.
- Black: The classic black model offers a monochrome appearance with a matte black dial, black ceramic bezel, rhodium-plated numerals, and white enamel diving scale.

FAQs
Is the Omega Planet Ocean worth it?
The Omega Planet Ocean is a worthwhile investment for collectors who value accuracy and engineering. Like any luxury watch, the Omega Planet Ocean is likely to increase in value over time. As a well-made timepiece, it’s unlikely to require excessive service and maintenance.
How accurate is the watch?
The watch’s METAS Master Chronometer spec targets around 0 to +5 seconds per day with normal use.
What is the bezel made of?
The Planet Ocean’s bezel is ceramic with a liquidmetal or ceragold inlays. It is highly scratch-resistant.
Do I need a helium escape valve?
Helium escape valves are typically used for saturation diving, not for recreational diving. However, the new Planet Ocean features a titanium ring for optimal sealing, eliminating the need for a helium escape valve in any diving application.
What is the recommended service interval?
Omega recommends a service interval of 5-8 years. However, you may need to take your watch in sooner if it is no longer accurate, or shows signs of condensation or damage.
