The Patek Philippe 175th Anniversary Multi-Scale Chronograph was released as part of a commemorative collection honoring the watch brand’s milestone event. Its defining feature, a multi-scale dial, records various measurements, appealing to technological sensibilities. A combination of a rose-gold case and cream-colored dial offers a vintage aesthetic.
Although the watch was part of a limited-edition run, Precision Watches is fortunate to have one in our collection. Here’s what we discovered from our in-person experience.
Patek Philippe 5957R Review
The 5975 family was introduced in 2014 as part of Patek Philippe’s 175th anniversary celebration. The multi-scale concept was a tribute to early 20th-century scientific and medical chronographs. The Multi-Scale Chronographer 5975R was produced in a limited-edition run, with 400 models in rose gold and 400 in white gold.
The Appearance
To say the dial is complex is an understatement. The multi-scaled radiating pattern gives the watch a technical look at first glance. However, the gold dauphine hands and applied markers stand out clearly against the lighter dial, making readability easier than you might think.
At 40mm, the face is quite bold. However, it has a slim profile at 10.25mm. The gently sloped conical bezel allows it to slide easily under clothing. It also provides a streamlined appearance, making it suitable for wrist sizes as small as 14 cm.
The lip of the bezel and caseback flare out beyond the case band, producing an over-rider quality. It lends a strong, distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart from other Patek Philippe watches.
Finally, let’s discuss the cream and rose gold combination. The rose gold is vibrant and dark, and could be described as a red-gold. It caters nicely to the cream-white face, creating a vintage appearance that is carried through with rounded-profile pushers, evoking a 1950s chronograph style.
Functionality
The watch can seem intimidating to the average user, but once you understand what’s what, you might actually have fun with it.
So we’re working with a triple scale dial as follows:
- A pulsation scale that measures pulse. Start the chronographer, count to 15, then stop it. The pulsation scale indicates the person’s pulse in beats per minute.
- The tachymeter gauges the speed of an object. Similar to the pulsation scale, you start the pusher when you pass the measured distance of the object, stop it when you pass the distance, and read the speed.
- The telemeter gauges the distance of artillery impact. To measure distance, start the chronograph when you see the event (such as an explosion or flash of lightning), stop it when you hear the sound, and read the distance.
What’s truly important is that the 60-second scale restarts every minute to time things that happen quickly over a short duration.
The functionalities make the watch ideal for soldiers, doctors, and military personnel. However, it is truly suited to anyone who appreciates a luxury watch with a vintage aesthetic.
Strap
The strap is a medium-brown, single-stitch leather with a calfskin backing. Color-wise, it blends nicely with the cream-and-rose-gold aesthetic. It can easily be removed for cleaning purposes with a press on the lugs- no tools needed.
CaseBack and Movement
Although the watch features a closed caseback, it offers automatic, in-house chronograph movement from the CH-28-520 family. It features a vertical clutch that lets you run the chronograph continually without excess wear. The second-hand-only, unidirectional movement allows you to keep the clutch engaged.
The movement may not be viewable, but the caseback is attractively engraved, making it a true collector’s item. It reads Patek Philippe’s founding and anniversary dates, 1839-2014.
The watch offers a 50–55-hour power reserve and is water-resistant up to 30 meters.
About Patek Philippe
The Patek Philippe brand was founded in 1839 when Antoni Patek started a watchmaking business in Geneva. He later partnered with Adrien Philippe, inventor of the keyless winding system. Over time, the brand built a reputation for high-end complications, like minute repeaters, world time, and calendars.
The brand has been owned by the Stern family since 1932 and remains independent, allowing the company to control quality, production, and long-term design direction, a trait appreciated by customers.

FAQs
What kind of person does the 5975R-001 appeal to?
The 5957R-001 appeals to seasoned collectors, vintage-style chronograph enthusiasts, and buyers who prefer limited editions over mainstream models.
Is the 5957R-001 more of a dress watch or a sports watch?
The 18K rose gold case, opaline, cream multi-scale dial, and leather strap make the 5957R-001 more of a dress watch. However, its technical character and rugged lines provide sports-watch functionality.
Is the 5957R-001 a good investment?
The 5957R-001 could be a good investment as it is a limited-edition collector’s item. However, variances in market trends mean future value is uncertain.
Can the chronograph be left running continuously?
Yes, the vertical-clutch design allows the watch’s central chronograph second hand to run continuously, providing optimal accuracy with minimal wear. Many owners prefer to keep it running to give the dial “more life”.
How legible is the dial given all the scales?
Although the dial is quite busy, the watch still offers optimal readability as the hands and applied markers contrast with the dial, and the absence of subdials keeps the layout clean.
