Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Review | Precision Watches

Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Review | Precision Watches

The Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 is worthy of resurrection. Originally released in 1977, this luxury-sports watch has returned in 2022, looking very much like its predecessor. But if you get into the nuts and bolts, you’ll notice a few contemporary updates that elevate its already fine details and functionalities.

We recently added a Vacheron Constantin 222 to the Precision Watches collection, giving me a chance to experience it firsthand. Here’s what I noticed when I gave the watch a spin.

You can also see the Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 in motion in our hands-on Instagram video, which captures the case details, bracelet finishing, and wrist presence in real time.

Vacheron Constantin Historiques 222 Review

My first impression of the watch conjured the term ‘dress-sports’. Though unmistakably elegant, it has a commanding look that puts it in sports territory. In my opinion, it’s a versatile choice.

Once, on your wrist, be prepared for it to make a statement. The Tunno case and integrated bracelet make this 37mm watch appear larger. Personally, I love the effect, but it may not be the best choice for people with smaller wrists or those aiming for a watch that will seamlessly blend with a dress suit.

As for the fit, yes, this watch is substantial, and you can feel the weight on your wrist, but it’s well balanced to feel reliable rather than clunky or overly heavy. This is due in part to the case’s canted edges, which provide a more ergonomic fit.

The Bracelet

The bracelet is quite sturdy, and some will notice that it’s an update from the previous model. There is almost no daylight showing between the tolerances, with just enough to provide flexibility. So, the durability is unmatched.

Additionally, screws rather than pins hold the bracelet together. In addition to increasing the durability, the manufacturing also makes it easy to remove links for a better fit. The bracelet closes with a double-fold clasp featuring twin releases, meaning it goes on and comes off in one swift movement.

Case Aesthetics

There is no doubt that the watch is attractive. I love the detailing, such as the brand’s signature Maltese cross, which is engraved on the clasp and crown, embedded under the 12 o’clock marker, and again just below the right-hand side of the case, in white gold and Palladium.

Attention is drawn to the case by an angled plinth that supports a similarly angled, polished, and scalloped bezel. Underneath the crystal, circular detailing adds a more featured appearance.

The loveliness continues with a matte yellow dial and authentic yellow gold hands, indices, logo, and date frame, and a mirror-polished inner vessel. Although the gold-on-gold could produce readability issues for some, the indices and hands are well defined with a darker gold outline. Additionally, its lumen makes it visible in low light.

The Caseback and Movement

When I turn the watch over, I see an exquisite caseback that does not disappoint. The 222 features a transparent sapphire crystal, an update from the previous solid monobloc case. You can use that to admire the Caliber 2455/2 automatic movement.

Like the 1977 model, it does not have a second hand, but on the caseback you can see a hacking or stop-seconds function, as the balance will stop when you pull the crown out.

You can also see the 222 engraved on the 22-karat gold rotor, which carries the scalloped bezel design theme. The dense gold works well on the rotor and mass, providing more accurate movement. Additionally, the combination of finishes enhances the aesthetics.

History of the Vacheron Constantin 222

The Vecheron Constantin 222 was originally released in 1977 to mark the brand’s 222nd anniversary. It was the watchmaker’s answer to the growing luxury sports watch market, designed to compete with Patek Philippe’s Nautilus and Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak.

The watch was designed by the young Jorge Hysek and is noted for its integrated bracelet, monobloc case, and bold modern lines. The original was available in three case sizes: 24mm, 34mm, and the jumbo 37mm. The 37mm was released as a limited edition and is much rarer than its counterparts.

Over the years, the 222 soared in value, in part due to a renewed interest in luxury sports watches. It was re-released 48 years later, marking the company’s 270th anniversary. The updated watch stays close to the original but integrates an in-house movement, a display caseback, a quickset date feature, and improved finishing.
