TUDOR Black Bay: Heritage Diving Design Meets Modern Watchmaking
The TUDOR Black Bay is one of the most recognizable dive watches in modern horology, blending mid-century design cues with contemporary movements and materials. Since its 2012 debut, the collection has grown to span multiple case sizes, dial colors, and in-house calibers, making it a cornerstone of the TUDOR catalog. This guide covers the history of TUDOR, the evolution of the Black Bay, and the key references collectors look for.
A Brief History of TUDOR
The TUDOR name was first registered in 1926 by Veuve de Philippe Hüther. The brand took its modern form in 1946, when Rolex founder Hans Wilsdorf established Montres TUDOR SA to offer watches built to exacting standards at a more accessible price. Early models like the Oyster and Oyster Prince established TUDOR’s reputation for durability, and the lineage continued through the Submariner references that would later inspire the Black Bay. Today the collection includes the Black Bay, Pelagos, Ranger, and Royal lines.
About the TUDOR Black Bay
The first Black Bay reference launched in 2012, drawing directly from TUDOR’s vintage dive watches of the 1950s. It paired a 41mm steel case with a domed sapphire crystal, a unidirectional rotating bezel, gilt accents, and the distinctive “snowflake” hands TUDOR introduced in the late 1960s. With 200 meters of water resistance and a choice of steel bracelet or leather strap, it offered vintage character with modern reliability.
Since then, the Black Bay has expanded considerably. The collection now spans 36mm, 39mm, 41mm, and larger cases, multiple bezel colors, ceramic and bronze options, and TUDOR’s chronometer-certified Manufacture Calibres with extended power reserves.
