Calibre de Cartier W7100042: Hands-On Review

Short on Time

The Calibre de Cartier W7100042 is a 42mm stainless steel watch built around Cartier’s first in-house automatic movement, the 1904-PS MC. It reads as the sportier, more masculine side of Cartier, with a silver dial, an oversized Roman numeral XII, a small seconds subdial at six, and a date at three. The movement holds a 48-hour power reserve. Cartier discontinued the line, which makes clean pre-owned examples the way to find one today. We currently have this example in our showroom, priced pre-owned.

Cartier watches are known for shaped watches: the Tank, the Santos, the Tonneau. The Calibre de Cartier was something different. Introduced in 2010, it was a round men’s watch built to showcase the Maison’s first in-house automatic movement. Because of this, it occupies an unusual place in the catalog. It is the Cartier for someone who wants the name and the design language, but in a larger, more conventional case. The example reviewed here is the pre-owned Calibre de Cartier W7100042 currently in our showroom.

The Movement | Cartier’s 1904-PS MC

The 1904-PS MC is the reason this watch exists. It was Cartier’s first in-house automatic caliber, named for the year Louis Cartier and Edmond Jaeger formed their partnership. The construction is serious. Twin barrels feed a steady flow of power to the escapement, ceramic ball bearings sit at the center of the rotor for durability, and a pawl-based winding system replaces the traditional reverser for faster winding. It beats at 28,800 vph, carries 27 jewels, and holds a 48-hour power reserve. The rotor and bridges wear Côtes de Genève finishing, visible through the sapphire caseback. For a first in-house automatic, it was a confident piece of engineering, and it remains reliable and serviceable today.

The Case | Cartier at 42mm

At 42mm wide and 10mm thick, this is a substantial Cartier. The round steel case has chamfered edges and curved lugs that soften the size on the wrist. A polished bezel frames the dial, and the crown carries Cartier’s signature octagonal shape set with a blue synthetic spinel cabochon, flanked by protective crown guards. The guards are a detail worth noting. They give the Calibre a tool-watch structure that most of the Cartier catalog does not have, and they are part of why this model reads as sportier than a Tank or a Santos.

The Dial | Familiar Codes, New Proportions

The silver dial carries unmistakable Cartier design codes, reorganized for a larger canvas. An oversized XII sits in slight relief at twelve. Roman numerals and a railroad minute track ring the dial. Sword-shaped hands, filled with luminous material, keep the time legible. A small seconds subdial sits at six, and a date window at three. Consequently, the layout is busier than a classic Cartier dress watch, but it stays balanced and clearly readable. It is a dial designed to be used, not only admired.

The Calibre de Cartier on the Wrist

This is where the model makes its case. On the wrist, the Calibre wears like a proper everyday watch rather than a dress piece reserved for occasions. The 42mm case has presence, yet the curved lugs and chamfered case keep it comfortable. The blue cabochon crown adds a spot of color against the steel. It pairs as easily with a jacket as with a shirt sleeve, which is the versatility the model was built for. Water resistance is rated to 30 meters, so treat it as an everyday watch rather than a swimmer.

A Discontinued Cartier | Why It Matters

Cartier no longer produces the Calibre de Cartier in this form. For a buyer, that changes the proposition. A discontinued reference with an in-house movement, bought pre-owned, offers a lot of watch for the money relative to its original retail. It also means the search happens on the secondary market rather than at a boutique. As an Authorized Cartier Watch Dealer, we can guide that search with confidence in what we sell.
