New Longines Spirit Pilot: Blue Dials in 39mm Cases

Short on Time

The new Longines Spirit Pilot line adds matte blue dials to two 39mm steel watches. The three-hand Pilot runs on an automatic COSC-certified movement with a 72-hour power reserve. The hand-wound Flyback adds a column-wheel chronograph, a blue ceramic bezel, and 68 hours of power. Both are water resistant to 100m. Each comes on a blue rubber strap or a steel bracelet. Prices run from $2,700 to $5,550.

The new Longines Spirit Pilot arrives in blue. Longines has added matte blue dials to the three-hand Spirit Pilot and to the hand-wound Spirit Pilot Flyback. Both keep a compact 39mm steel case and 100m of water resistance. Each comes on a blue rubber strap or a steel bracelet, with prices from $2,700 to $5,550. Together, they extend the Longines Spirit family with four new references.

This guide covers what changed, how each model is built, and which version suits which buyer.

Why Blue Makes Sense for the Spirit Pilot

Longines introduced black-dial versions of both models a year ago. Collectors welcomed them. The restrained look and smaller cases were the draw. Blue is the natural next step.

Blue is also a safe, versatile color. It works with a suit and with a T-shirt. It adds personality without losing the cockpit-instrument feel that defines a pilot watch.

The Spirit collection itself dates to 2020. It draws on Longines’ long aviation history and on vintage watches worn by early aviators. Since then, it has grown with new sizes, new materials, and new complications. These blue models continue that slow, deliberate growth.

The Three-Hand Pilot in Blue

The Spirit Pilot is the simplest watch in the group. It shows hours, minutes, and seconds, with no date window. That keeps the dial clean.

The 39mm stainless steel case is 11.5mm thick and 47.2mm lug to lug. Rhodium-plated applied Arabic numerals and sword-style hands sit on the matte blue dial. Super-LumiNova coats the numerals and hands for a green glow in the dark. A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating protects the dial. The screw-down crown and screw-in case back support 100m of water resistance.

Inside is the Longines L888.4, an ETA-based automatic caliber made exclusively for Longines. Several details stand out:

  • Power reserve: 72 hours, which is weekend-proof
  • Frequency: 25,200 vibrations per hour
  • Balance spring: Silicon, with magnetic resistance up to 10 times the ISO 764 standard
  • Certification: COSC chronometer

You can choose the strap. The Longines Pilot rubber strap version has a Swiss-made blue rubber strap with a pin buckle, and it costs $2,700. It is easy to wear and easy to swap. The Longines Pilot steel bracelet version has a three-row steel bracelet with a folding push-button clasp and micro-adjustment, and it costs $3,100.

The Flyback Chronograph in Blue

The Spirit Pilot Flyback is the more complex model. It is a chronograph watch with a flyback function. That feature lets you restart the timing hand with one press, without stopping and resetting it first.

Longines has a real history here. The brand was developing flyback chronographs in the 1930s, and it filed a patent for one in 1935. So the function on this watch is more than a borrowed name.

The case is 39.5mm across, 47.4mm lug to lug, and 13.4mm thick. A bidirectional bezel carries a blue ceramic insert with a countdown scale. Together with the blue dial, it gives the watch a monochrome look. Two pump-style pushers flank the crown. The subdials sit at 3 and 9 o’clock for 30 elapsed minutes and running seconds. Water resistance is 100m.

LONGINES SPIRIT PILOT FLYBACK

A Hand-Wound Movement You Can See

Powering the Flyback is the hand-wound Longines L792.4. A sapphire exhibition caseback shows it off. The caliber uses a column wheel to drive the chronograph. It also has a silicon balance spring, a 68-hour power reserve, and COSC chronometer certification. It beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour.

Hand winding suits a watch like this one. If you are new to it, our guide to manual wind watches explains how it works and why many owners enjoy the routine.

Two versions are available. The Longines Flyback rubber strap model costs $5,250, and the Longines Flyback steel bracelet model costs $5,550.

Sizing and Wear on the 39mm Cases

At 39mm and 39.5mm, both watches wear on the compact side. That is a deliberate return to classic pilot proportions. Lug-to-lug lengths of 47.2mm and 47.4mm suit a wide range of wrists.

The three-hand Pilot is the slimmer of the two at 11.5mm. The Flyback is 13.4mm thick, which is a normal height for a chronograph with a column wheel.
