The Royal Oak Offshore

Every pre-owned Royal Oak Offshore descends from a 1993 provocation. Audemars Piguet handed a young designer named Emmanuel Gueit a brief to mark the Royal Oak’s twentieth anniversary, and he returned with something considerably louder than anyone expected: a 42mm case at a time when 36mm was standard, exposed rubber gaskets, oversized pushers, and a dial pattern scaled up into what became known as Méga Tapisserie.

Purists at the brand were not enthusiastic. The watch earned the nickname “The Beast” and sold anyway, and it kept selling. Three decades on, the Offshore is where Audemars Piguet experiments with materials and proportions that the standard Royal Oak would never accommodate, and it has built a following that has little interest in restraint.

Why Buy a Pre-Owned Royal Oak Offshore?

The Offshore has produced more variations, limited editions, and collaborations than any other AP collection, and the overwhelming majority are only available on the secondary market. Discontinued 42mm and 44mm chronograph cases, earlier Diver generations, forged carbon and colored ceramic experiments, and the long list of limited editions all live here.

The Offshore also tends to offer more wrist presence per dollar than the standard Royal Oak. Steel and ceramic Offshore references generally carry lower premiums than equivalent Royal Oaks, which makes the collection a more accessible route into Audemars Piguet ownership for buyers who want the scale and the attitude. As with any AP, counterfeits are common and the finishing details that matter require trained assessment, so buying from a dealer with watchmakers on site is worth the difference.

Royal Oak Offshore References

Selfwinding Chronograph, 43mm (26420 series). The current chronograph, introduced in 2021, replacing the earlier 42mm and 44mm cases. Its Calibre 4401 is an integrated flyback chronograph with a column wheel and vertical clutch rather than the modular construction used previously, which improves pusher feel and simplifies service. Available in stainless steel, titanium, ceramic, and pink gold, most with a contrasting black ceramic bezel.

Earlier chronograph references (26170, 26470, 26238). The 42mm and 44mm generations that defined the Offshore through the 2000s and 2010s. These are pre-owned propositions now and represent some of the better value in the collection. The 26238 is notable for reviving the look of the 1993 original.

Offshore Diver (15720 series). A 42mm ISO 6425 certified dive watch with 300m water resistance and an inner rotating dive bezel. The current 15720ST arrived in 2021 with the in-house Calibre 4308, ceramic crowns, and a tool-free strap change system. The previous 15710ST generation offered a wider range of dial colors and trades for meaningfully less.

Ceramic and alternative materials. Full ceramic references like the 26405CE and 26420CE, along with forged carbon and titanium executions. These are where the Offshore’s material experimentation is most visible.

Ladies’ references. The 37mm Offshore, including the steel 26231ST, available with diamond-set bezels and in steel, rose gold, or two-tone.

Pre-Owned Royal Oak Offshore Prices

Pre-owned Offshore prices generally run from the low twenties into the high five figures, with material and generation driving most of the spread. Earlier steel Diver references such as the 15710ST typically start around $19,000 to $22,000, while current 15720ST examples in popular dial colors trade closer to $30,000 to $35,000. Steel chronographs from the 26420 series and earlier 42mm generations generally sit in the $30,000 to $50,000 range depending on condition and configuration. Ceramic, titanium, and pink gold references run higher, and sought-after limited editions can go considerably beyond that.

Original box and papers matter with Audemars Piguet and affect value measurably. Our inventory changes regularly, so contact us if you are after a specific reference and we will let you know what we can source.

Authenticated and Serviced In-House

Audemars Piguet is among the most counterfeited luxury brands, and Offshore references are frequently targeted. Every pre-owned Offshore we sell is examined by our on-site watchmakers, who verify the movement and chronograph operation, check serial and reference numbers, assess bracelet and case finishing, and evaluate the depth and regularity of the Méga Tapisserie dial pattern against factory specifications. Chronograph function and water resistance are tested where applicable. Watches are serviced as needed before listing, and every pre-owned Offshore carries our two-year warranty.

Considering the wider catalog? The Royal Oak is the 1972 original: slimmer, dressier, and the watch the Offshore was built to react against. The Jules Audemars collection represents the brand’s classical side in round cases. You can also browse our full range of pre-owned Audemars Piguet watches.

FAQ

How much is a pre-owned Royal Oak Offshore?

Most pre-owned Offshores run from the low twenties into the high five figures. Earlier steel Divers start around $19,000 to $22,000, current Divers trade closer to $30,000 to $35,000, and steel chronographs generally sit between $30,000 and $50,000. Ceramic, titanium, and pink gold references cost more, and limited editions can run considerably higher. Condition, completeness, and configuration all affect price.

What is the difference between the Royal Oak and the Royal Oak Offshore?

The Royal Oak is the 1972 original: slimmer, more restrained, and designed as a luxury sports watch that could pass in formal settings. The Offshore arrived in 1993 as a deliberately bolder interpretation, with larger cases, thicker profiles, oversized pushers, and the scaled-up Méga Tapisserie dial. Both share the octagonal bezel and exposed screws, but they wear very differently and suit different buyers.

Is the Royal Oak Offshore Diver a real dive watch?

Yes. The Offshore Diver is certified to ISO 6425, with 300m water resistance and an inner rotating bezel for tracking dive time. That makes it considerably more capable underwater than standard Offshore references, which are rated to 100m. It is a genuine tool watch that happens to be finished to Audemars Piguet standards.

What size is the Royal Oak Offshore?

The current Selfwinding Chronograph is 43mm, having replaced earlier 42mm and 44mm cases. The Offshore Diver is 42mm. Ladies’ references are 37mm. All wear substantially due to case thickness and the integrated strap or bracelet, so trying one on is worth doing. You can schedule an appointment to compare sizes in our showroom.

Which Offshore chronograph generation should I buy?

The 26420 series from 2021 onward uses the integrated Calibre 4401 flyback chronograph, which offers better pusher feel and less demanding servicing than the modular movements in earlier references. Earlier 42mm and 44mm generations, including the 26170 and 26470, cost less and carry the proportions many collectors associate with the collection’s peak. Both are sound choices, and the decision usually comes down to budget and preferred case size.

How can you spot a fake Royal Oak Offshore?

Authentication comes down to the depth and regularity of the Méga Tapisserie dial pattern, the finishing and alignment of the bezel screws, the quality of case chamfering, chronograph pusher operation, and the movement itself. Serial and reference numbers should match factory records. Counterfeits have improved enough that visual inspection alone is unreliable, which is why every Offshore at Precision Watches is verified by our in-house watchmakers.

Do your pre-owned Royal Oak Offshores come with a warranty?

Yes. All pre-owned watches from Precision Watches include our two-year international warranty covering mechanical defects, with warranty work handled by our on-site service center.

Can I trade my current watch toward a pre-owned Offshore?

Yes. We accept trade-ins toward any watch in our inventory. Our team evaluates the brand, condition, and current market demand for your watch, then applies the agreed value to your purchase.
