Cartier's Place in Watchmaking
Cartier occupies an unusual position. The Maison was founded in Paris in 1847 as a jeweller, and its watchmaking began with a practical request: in 1904, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont asked Louis Cartier for a watch he could read in flight without taking his hands from the controls. The result was the Santos, generally recognised as the first purpose-built men’s wristwatch made in series.
That origin explains much of what followed. Cartier designs are shape-led rather than specification-led, and the collections are named for their forms. Each carries the design language of the moment it was created, and Cartier has been notably consistent about preserving those forms across decades rather than redesigning them.
Why Buy a Pre-Owned Cartier?
The secondary market is where Cartier’s back catalogue lives. Discontinued references, retired case sizes, earlier quartz and mechanical generations, and collections no longer in production are all available pre-owned and nowhere else. The Calibre de Cartier, introduced in 2010 and since discontinued, is one example. Earlier Panthère references from before the 2017 reintroduction are another.
Cartier also offers unusual breadth across sizes. Many collections are produced in small, medium, and large models, which means a pre-owned search often turns up proportions that are no longer part of the current lineup. For buyers with smaller or larger wrists, that range matters.
Pre-Owned Cartier Collections
Santos de Cartier. The 1904 original, defined by its square case, exposed bezel screws, and Roman numeral dial. The integrated bracelet arrived in 1978, and the collection was relaunched in 2018 with the QuickSwitch strap system and SmartLink bracelet adjustment.
Ballon Bleu. Introduced in 2007, built around a rounded case with the blue sapphire cabochon crown set into a hooded guard that arcs across the case side. Produced across a wide range of sizes from 28mm through 42mm.
Panthère de Cartier. Launched in 1983, with a square case, screw-set bezel, and a supple brick-link bracelet that gives the collection its name. Discontinued in the early 2000s and reintroduced in 2017.
Calibre de Cartier. Introduced in 2010 as a round, more overtly masculine case with an in-house automatic movement. Now discontinued, which makes it available on the pre-owned market only.
Pre-Owned Cartier Prices
Cartier spans a wider range than most luxury watch brands. Pre-owned quartz models in steel begin in the low thousands, while steel automatic references from the Santos and Ballon Bleu collections typically run from the mid four figures into the low five figures. Gold cases, two-tone configurations, and diamond-set bezels move considerably higher, and larger complicated references higher still.

Every pre-owned Cartier we sell passes through our on-site watchmakers before it is listed. That includes movement inspection and timing verification, case and bracelet assessment, water resistance testing where applicable, and verification of reference and serial numbers. Most Cartier collections are produced in multiple models. The Ballon Bleu ranges from 28mm through 42mm, the Panthère is offered in mini, small, and medium, and the Santos comes in small, medium, and large. Is the Calibre de Cartier discontinued?
Yes. The Calibre de Cartier was introduced in 2010 and has since been withdrawn from the collection, so it is available on the pre-owned market only. It remains of interest to buyers looking for a round Cartier case with an in-house automatic movement.

Authentication involves verifying the movement, checking reference and serial numbers against records, and assessing case construction, dial printing, and bracelet finishing against factory specifications.
