A pre-owned Patek Philippe Nautilus is the most sought-after steel sports watch in the world, and for most buyers the secondary market is the only realistic way to own one. Gérald Genta drew it in 1976, four years after the Royal Oak, taking inspiration from a ship’s porthole: a rounded octagonal bezel, twin lateral hinges, a horizontally embossed dial, and a bracelet integrated so completely into the case that the two read as one object.

It arrived to skepticism. A steel watch priced against gold seemed like a category error twice over. Fifty years later the Nautilus is the watch that defines Patek Philippe in the public imagination, and demand has outrun production for most of the last decade.

Why Buy a Pre-Owned Nautilus?

Availability is the whole story. Patek produces the Nautilus in small numbers and distributes through a limited retail network, and the most wanted references have been discontinued outright. The steel 5711 ended production in 2021, and its successor the 5811 arrived in white gold rather than steel, leaving no direct steel replacement in the catalog. If you want a steel Nautilus, the secondary market is where it exists.

That scarcity has made the Nautilus one of the few watches to trade consistently above retail, though prices have moved considerably since the peak of the 2021 to 2022 market. The collection is also heavily counterfeited, and the details that matter most, the dial embossing, bracelet taper, and case construction, are precisely the ones that separate a good fake from a real one. Nautilus References

Reference 5711. The 40mm steel time-and-date Nautilus produced from 2006 to 2021, and the reference most people picture when they hear the name. The blue dial 5711/1A is the definitive modern version. Discontinued at the height of its popularity, it remains the most requested Nautilus on the secondary market.

Reference 5811. The 5711’s successor, introduced in 2022 at 41mm in white gold. It revives the two-part case construction of the original 3700 and adds a secured fold-over clasp with a lockable adjustment system.

Reference 5712. Adds a moon phase, power reserve indicator, and small seconds to the Nautilus dial, creating an asymmetric layout that reads quite differently from the 5711 despite the shared case.

Reference 5980. The flyback chronograph, at 40.5mm, with a two-register layout that keeps the dial cleaner than most chronographs manage. The 5990 extends it with a Travel Time dual time zone complication.

Reference 5726. The annual calendar, displaying day, date, month, and moon phase while requiring only one correction per year.

Vintage and ladies’ references. The original 3700 from 1976 and the later 3800 at 37.5mm offer more compact proportions that suit smaller wrists. Ladies’ references include the automatic 7118 and quartz 7010.

Pre-Owned Nautilus Prices

The Nautilus is the most expensive collection Patek makes outside of grand complications, and pricing moves with the market more than most watches. Steel time-and-date references generally start around $70,000 and run considerably higher depending on dial, condition, and completeness. The discontinued 5711 commands a premium over that, though values have come down meaningfully from the 2021 to 2022 peak and continue to move. Complicated steel references including the 5712, 5726, and 5980 typically trade above six figures, and precious metal examples start higher still. Vintage references and ladies’ models offer the most accessible entry points.
