A used Omega Speedmaster is a chance to own one of the most historically significant watches ever made. Introduced in 1957 as a motorsport chronograph, the Speedmaster became NASA’s flight-qualified watch and, in 1969, the first watch worn on the moon. It has been part of all six lunar landings, and the core Moonwatch design has stayed remarkably faithful to the watch Buzz Aldrin wore on the surface.

Speedmaster ’57 : A heritage model at 40.5mm referencing the 1957 original, with broad arrow hands and a modern Co-Axial Master Chronometer movement. The most wearable of the traditional Speedmasters for smaller wrists.
Dark Side of the Moon : The 44.25mm case machined from a single block of black ceramic, the collection’s boldest modern interpretation, with several dial and colour variations.
Speedmaster Reduced : The smaller 38mm to 39mm automatic Speedmaster produced from the late 1980s until 2009. Now discontinued and available pre-owned only, it is the most accessible way into the design.
Limited and special editions : The Snoopy Award editions, First Omega in Space, Silver Snoopy, and numerous anniversary and mission tributes, many produced in limited numbers and sought after by collectors.

They are the same watch. “Moonwatch” is the nickname for the Speedmaster Professional, the 42mm manual-wind chronograph NASA qualified for spaceflight and the model worn on the moon. Omega now uses “Moonwatch” as the official name for the Professional. The wider Speedmaster collection includes other models, but the Moonwatch specifically refers to the space-flown Professional.
Is the MoonSwatch the same as an Omega Speedmaster?
No. The MoonSwatch, or Bioceramic MoonSwatch, is a joint Omega and Swatch collaboration launched in 2022, made from Swatch’s bioceramic material with a quartz movement, and priced accordingly. The Omega Speedmaster is a mechanical Swiss chronograph in steel or precious metals at a very different level. They share design cues, but they are separate watches from two different brands.
Should I choose a hesalite or sapphire Speedmaster?
Both crystals are correct, and the choice is about priorities. Hesalite is the acrylic crystal NASA originally approved, giving the dial a warm vintage look, and it can be polished if scratched. Sapphire is scratch-resistant and usually paired with a display caseback that shows the movement. Purists tend to choose hesalite for historical accuracy, while sapphire suits buyers who want durability and a view of the calibre.
What is the difference between the Caliber 1861 and 3861?
The 3861 replaced the 1861 in 2021 as the movement in the Moonwatch Professional. Both are manual-wind chronographs descended from the movement worn on the moon, but the 3861 adds a Co-Axial escapement, a silicon balance spring, and Master Chronometer certification for improved accuracy and magnetic resistance. The 1861 is now discontinued, which makes it a popular and more affordable pre-owned entry point.
